Post Script: Threatened ZIP Codes in the South

  In 2011, the United States Postal Service announced 3,653 rural post offices would close, with a disproportionate number located in the South.

  The rural post office serves as a symbolic town center. More concretely, its location and physical address secures a ZIP code for the surrounding community, serving as the numerical identity of place. In communities without home delivery, a town’s ZIP code is erased from the American map if they lose their local post office.

  These photographs were made in rural communities in the South impacted by PostPlan legislation and facing increased marginalization. Shot on 4x5” sheet film, this work reflects broadly on the handcraft of analog traditions, place, identity, and loss in rural America.
