Approximately 15,000 migrant farmworkers spend several months of each year working in the state of North Carolina under the H2A Sanctuary Act.
At a time when I was also in a transitory stage of life, I found myself most interested in how individuals cultivated spaces of their own, albeit in temporary dwellings. I’m extremely grateful to all for graciously sharing with me in spite of trying circumstances.
I’m also grateful to Student Action for Farmworkers, a program through Duke University & the Center for Documentary Studies that directly advocates for these farmworkers and better housing conditions. Their partnership was essential.
